REGISTERING FOR CLASSES
How do I register for classes?
Class registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis and payment must be received in full to confirm a place in a class.
Firefly uses Amilia for all its registrations. It’s an offsite registration software system and payment gateway. It easy to use and it is entirely secure (we don’t store any of your credit card information)
Registration & Payment
The easiest and most efficient way of registering for a class is through the use of our online registration system. You can also register with a credit card over the phone or by dropping off a cheque or cash during our office hours. If bringing cash or a cheque please call ahead to confirm that there is still space in the class. We do not accept debit payment at this time. You will receive an enrolment confirmation and receipt via email once your payment has been processed.
Fees & Paperwork
The following forms are available for download and can be filled out and brought before your first class. If this is your very first class with us, please arrive to class a little early so that this can be taken care of and class can start on time:
- Registration Form
- Liability Waiver: either Adult or for guardian Child. Students or their guardians are required to fill out a once a year.
- There is a mandatory $20 non-refundable annual registration fee per student (valid from September 1st until August 31st). This will be charged when you register online at Amilia, or in person if you pay by cash or cheque.
Can I call or send you an email asking to reserve a spot in a class?
No. While it is helpful for us to know that you are planning to register in a particular class, we cannot confirm your spot until we receive your payment.
What if the class I want to register for is full?
If the class you would like to register for is full, our registration system will ask you if you would like to be on the wait list. We highly recommend putting your name down on the wait list because you never know when someone will drop out at the last minute.
Can I register more than one person for a class online?
Yes. You can register yourself and a buddy for the same class using our online system easily. When paying for someone other than yourself, use the “Pay for another client” function rather than changing the quantity field on the check out screen.
LATE ARRIVAL POLICY
If a student arrives later than 15 minutes into a class, it is up to our instructors discretion to decide if the student will be allowed to participate. When you arrive late, not only are you discourteous to your fellow students, you also disrupt your coach’s ability to deliver a safe and effective class. Coaches use warm up exercises, stretching and skill development at the start of each class to establish safe physical practices and proper technique that students will build on through the rest of the class. You may not miss the warm up. Students who arrive late may stay and observe and stretch on their own beside the class, but may not be allowed to participate.
CANCELLATIONS & MISSED CLASSES
What if I change my mind?
Refunds will be issued up to 14 days prior to the first day of class minus a $35+gst cancellation fee per class. If you cancel your registration less than 14 days prior to the first class you will incur a $100+GST per class cancellation fee. The balance will be credited to your account, to be used within one year.
No refunds will be issued after the first day of class.
What if I miss a class?
We do not refund or run additional classes for people to make up any classes they have missed. If you need to miss a class, please ask if we can arrange for you to make it up by attending a class within the current session. This is contingent on availability of space in other classes. Each student is permitted only one make-up per class, per session, which can only occur within the session that the class was missed. Students may attend Open Studio as their make up class.
Please note there are no make-up classes available for our Circus for Kids, Beginner and Introductory Classes.
Firefly Theatre reserves the right to cancel any class for lack of participants.
Where are classes held?
Classes are held in our training space at 8540 Roper Road, at the intersection of 86th street and 51st avenue right across from the Provincial Archives. Check out Google Maps or the ETS Trip Planner if you need help finding it.
There are many bus lines that stop on our corner, making public transit to the studio accessible. We also have plenty of free parking.
Are there any prerequisites for the classes?
We recommend that people new to circus start by taking Introduction to Aerial Arts, Beginner Silks or one of our Aerial Fitness & Conditioning classes.
There are prerequisites for higher-level classes so please read the class descriptions carefully. If you have any questions, ask your instructor or email Firefly’s Academy Coordinator.
If you are new to Firefly and have previous circus experience, please contact the Academy Administrator before registering for higher-level courses. You will be asked to provide details about your past experience and you may be required to book a half hour assessment with one of our instructors, the cost of which is $40 + GST.
What should I wear?
Wear reasonably form-fitting “yoga attire” that covers your legs and your stomach. Tights or pants should be at least ¾ length. Please do not wear jeans or shoes, or clothing with Velcro or zippers or buttons or buckles. Help us protect the equipment! Please do not wear jewelry. If your instructor is concerned about any hard-to-remove jewelry, you will have the option of removing it, covering it up, or staying off the fabric and ropes.
What should I bring?
Mostly just bring yourself, a positive attitude and a water bottle.
We have cubbies in our lobby for storing your stuff (jackets, bags, etc.) while you are training so that you don’t need to leave any of your belongings at the front of the gym or on the floor. We also have some smaller shelves at the edge or our training space for smaller items such as wallets, phones, jewelry etc.
How early should I arrive?
It’s a good idea to arrive about 10 minutes prior to your class. We have a comfortable lobby, changing rooms and stretching area where you can get ready for your class. We ask that students please remain in these areas until their class starts.
What will we do in class?
All of our classes begin with a warm up and end with a cool down. For more information about your specific class, please see the class descriptions.
Can my friends and family come watch?
We encourage and appreciate you sharing your love of aerial circus arts with your friends and family. Some weeks may be better than others for guest viewing, so please ask your instructor which days would be best for viewers.
We love having photos of us performing, so we appreciate that you want photographic evidence of yourself doing amazing things to prove to any non-believers that you have indeed joined the circus! We simply ask that you speak with your instructor first about when in the session will be the best time for you to do this.
Will I be sore?
Expect to be challenged, expect to have fun. Your hands might hurt, and you should be rather tired by the end of class. (That is probably an understatement.) Your muscles may be sore the day or two after class, especially if you are over 25. This is normal. A hot bath with Epsom salts can be helpful.
What if class leaves me wanting more? When can I practice what I am learning?
Current Firefly students enrolled in Level 1 classes or higher may come to Open Studio. You will be supervised, but not instructed. This is your time to practice what you have learned in class and build strength on your own.
Open Studio is for adult students aged 18 and up and runs on a first-come, first serve basis. The cost is $10 per session. See the calendar for current Open Studio dates and class scheduling.
